Juneteenth 2021: Why we celebrate and what to make

JUNETEENTH will most likely become the 12th federal holiday, because of the Senate passing a bill late yesterday. Under the legislation, the federal holiday would be known as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

For those who may not know, Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texasin 1865 to take control of the state to ensure that all enslaved African-American people were freed.

Traditionally, Juneteenth celebrations are backyard BBQs, block parties, family gatherings, and reunions. These events mainly center on food. Spending time with relatives and loved ones eating comfort foods is something POC often do because it feels safe and unapologetically authentic. From Auntie’s famous potato salad to Grandma’s addictive red velvet cake, these dishes are to be shared, bringing joy and comfort to your tribe. And that is key because nothing shows love like preparing a dish or a spread for your people!!

2020 was an incredibly tough year. We see the light in 2021 and I expect Saturday is going to be pretty Lit!! Have fun, stay safe, and take a moment to remember our ancestors.

Linked below are some of our recipes that can help make your celebration a tasty one!!!
